LEAF Lecture Series
Milwaukee County's Connecting Caring Communities Partnership - Prospect / Farwell Initiative (PFI)
The PFI is the third neighborhood of focus in Milwaukee County's Connecting Caring Communities Partnership (CCCP), a unique effort that attempts to improve the elder-friendliness of neighborhoods by connecting older adults with people and organizations/businesses in their communities. Milwaukee County is one of 18 communities funded under the Community Partnerships for Older Adults Program (CPFOA) of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, with local funding provided by the Helen Bader Foundation, Faye McBeath Foundation, and the Greater Milwaukee Foundation. Beginning in September 2002, the CCCP launched efforts in the Sherman Park and Layton Blvd. neighborhoods, moving to Prospect / Farwell in mid-2006. For most of 2007, Tom Fritsch and Lorna Dilley have been sitting in on the CCCP, Prospect/Farwell group, meetings, exploring how UWM and CAC might contribute to their efforts in this area.
After gathering with and listing to older adults in the Prospect/Farwell neighborhood through a series of focus groups, CCCP staff learned of a desire among residents for continued learning opportunities in the community. Residents expressed a willingness to pay a nominal fee for such opportunities, as long as they were close by - in the neighborhood.
In partnership with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, Let's Take Care (LTC), Milwaukee County Department on Aging, Chai Point Senior Living, and other neighborhood service providers, CAC planned and helped to launch the Learning is Educational and Fun (LEAF) program, a lecture series to take place at the Lakeside Senior Enrichment center, which is located at Chai Point on Prospect Avenue. The series began in February, 2008.

LEAF Guest Speakers for March and April, 2009
Last year's LEAF lecture series was a success by all accounts. This year, LEAF participants expressed their interest in learning about music and film. You asked for it, and here it is. Below are speakers for the months of March and April, 2009. Please visit this site periodically for updates.
The Orchestra's Inner Voices: The viola is neither a violin nor a cello; it's the instrument in between. Join us on March 17, 2009, from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm as Nathan Hacket, violist in the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (MSO) explores this soulful instrument which produces the vital "inner voices" of symphonic music.
The Piccolo: It Doesn't Get Much Higher! Judy Ormond is the piccolo player of the MSO. On March 31, from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm, she will describe what it is like to play this tiny instrument which can sing out above the entire orchestra! Judy, a tri-athlete, will also share her interests in fitness, and how this ties in with good music-making.
Are You Ready for Some Brass? Megumi Kanda, native of Japan, is principal trombonist of the MSO. Join us as she describes "A Trombone History." Internationally acclaimed for her playing, Ms. Kanda has a "rock star" status in Japan. Her life story with her instrument will fascinate you. April 7, 2009, from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
The Heavenly Harp: A cliché, perhaps, but when played by a master like Dannis Kelley, principal Harp player of the MSO, who could disagree? Fresh back from a year-long sabbatical during which she traveled the world, Ms. Kelly will dazzle you with the complexities of this instrument that has strings, pedals, levers, and approximately 1400 moving parts. April 21, 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
